I want these videos to inspire you to try something new and give free motion quilting a go on your home sewing machine. I hope that really helps you realize that I really take my time, break it up into manageable bits and don’t stress about being off of the lines, because the lines are going away. You are going to see me quilt a pass in real time from the same angle I see. How to break the meander down into manageable pieces, where to place your hands and match up the stencil so you can have a seamless all over heart quilting design. I cover how to use the stencil and pounce pad to transfer the markings to your quilt top. It would be so cute for a Valentine’s Day quilt, or just a quilt for someone you love. Today we are working with the new I Love It! stencil which has a really cute heart meander pattern. But we just did a MAJOR restock on all of our Full Line Stencil free motion quilting supplies, so we thought now was the perfect time! If I need to be more precise as to where I am stitching, I use the Sulky Solvy and can easily see if I need to adjust a little to get closer to the edges of the pieces, etc. It’s been a minute since we did a free motion quilting tutorial on a home sewing machine. If I have a lot of repeating blocks, the Golden Threads is easier to get consistent designs done. I choose my method based on the particular quilt. I use them because I've tried other markers on sample sandwiches and had a hard time removing what transferred onto the thread when I sewed. I draw my designs with Crayola Washable Markers. It's more prep work up front, but a breeze at the end. At its most basic, it is a band consisting of short. The pattern can be found in a variety of forms. The ‘Greek key’, also known as the ‘meander’, is a repeating geometric motif that has been used across buildings, decorative arts, jewelry and even clothes for centuries. I draw the designs (need 1 for each block or section), sew thru them, tear off the larger bits and the rest washes out when I wash the quilt after binding. Whether or not you know the name, you’ll recognize the pattern. The basic meander looks like random wiggly lines that never end. 1 - It is actually difficult to be random in my opinion. It's easy to see where you are sewing because it is clear. Hi quilty friends its time to put on your quilting gloves and learn to stitch the MEANDER This is usually one of the first free-motion quilting techniques a person learns, but I have saved it until the end for a few reasons. (yardage and strip quantities detailed on the back of the pattern) The design uses two backgrounds and alternating blocks to make a path that meanders across the quilt giving. The Sulky Solvy is kind of like glad wrap, only it is water soluble. Fat Quarter Friendly This quilt pattern uses 2 1/2' strips and squares. Some people use the Glad Press & Seal, but for me, I find it's a pain to move the little bits leftover in the tight areas. So it's quicker up front, but takes a little longer at the end. I still have areas where my stitches are small and it's harder to get the little bits out. The only drawback to this is removing the paper after. It is translucent, so you can usually see where you are going with the paper on. The Golden Threads paper is great because you can draw it once, stack them up and sew on the lines without thread, then you separate the papers, and quilt each one where you want it. I'd rather not take the time to remove my markings after. The only time I did that was to draw the scallops on a border, but I was cutting on the line, not quilting. I never draw directly on the quilt myself. You could mark the quilt directly you could trace it onto Golden Threads paper and follow the lines, quilting right thru the paper or you could trace the design onto Sulky Solvy and quilt directly thru that. There are a few ways to handle that once you pick a pattern. Or you could freehand some C shaped waves in rows. It looks great! ĭepending on the style of the pattern, you may be able to use a walking foot to do the same type of pattern.Īs for FMQ, google clip art of ocean waves and print something out. Eddie did a quilt called Surf Song and quilted along each color diagonally from corner to corner.
